The item is a loving cup for two male friends - (J D inscription refers to David and Jonathan?). The makers' marks (FJL GL) are for Frances James Langford and George Langford, trading as the Bristol Goldsmiths Alliance (which is also on the base of the cup). A piece of social history, made in 1888 just before the trials of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Two-handled friendship mugs between males ceased to be called "loving cups" , and a third handle, making them Welsh tygs was added for good measure .
