Em 1711 foi publicada a obra Cultura e Opulencia do Brasil por suas drogas e minas do jesuita Joao Antonio Andreoni (1649-1716). Essa obra foi composta entre 1693 a 1709 e dirigia-se aos senhores de engenho, lavradores do tabaco e aos mineiros da America Portuguesa. A obra tratou das principais atividades economicas da colonia: o acucar, o tabaco, as minas, a pecuaria e outros contratos reais. Andreoni valorizou em seu livro o papel da agricultura (acucar e tabaco) em detrimento das descobertas das minas no seculo XVIII. O discurso do jesuita representou os interesses da elite colonial sustentada e legitimada socialmente pelas lavouras do acucar e do tabaco. Esse grupo poderia ser prejudicado na visao de Andreoni pela descoberta das minas. Teria sido Andreoni um homem a frente de seu tempo que notava que os interesses ligados ao economico faziam mais sentido do que as questoes propriamente religiosas? Nao. Andreoni foi um homem inserido em uma gama de relacoes sociais constituida por religiosos e autoridades regias. Ele percebeu algumas mudancas no jogo politico da colonia e buscou harmoniza-las segundo sua concepcao de mundo onde a razao divina regia o corpo politico colonial.
