About this product
Product Information
John Olsen is recognised nationally and internationally as one of Australia's most significant and accomplished artists. In this publication on Olsen's art and life, the author surveys his development from his early work to the present, revealing this artist's extraordinary versatility and breadth of creative vision. Few Australian artists paint and draw with the fluency and vitality of Olsen. from the time when his reputation was firmly established in the early 1960s with works such as his innovative, colloquial You Beaut Country series and evocations of Sydney Harbour, through his many journeys into regional Australia in the 1970s and 1980s, Olsen's passionate attachment to the local environment has continually revealed fresh insights into a sense of place. Olsen's ability to capture the atmosphere of place has not been restricted to his home country, as his dramatic paintings based on Spain and Portugal clearly indicate. His feeling for the Mediterranean way of life and joie de vivre has been an important aspect of his art and life. In the late 1980s and 1990s, his portraits and introspective, mediate pictures also reveal a profound humanity. This book places Olsen's work in the context of his times. It investigates the wide array of sources that have inspired him, including Aboriginal, Oriental and European art. Also considered is Olsen's passionate interest in poetry and literature which has often provided a springboard for his creativity. In addition to his paintings and drawings, the artist's facility to work in range of media is apparent in his prints, tapestries, ceramics, ceiling paintings and murals. The launch of the first edition of this publication shortlisted for a New South Wales Premier's literary award, coincided with the John Olsen Retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1991. This updated second edition includes an overview of critical responses to the retrospective, as well as an analysis of some of Olsen's most remarkable paintings and drawings undertaken from 1991 to early 1999. Through her extensive research, Deborah Hart weaves a lively and intriguing path through Olsen's rich and varied oeuvre, bringing a greater depth of understanding both to the artist himself and his considerable contribution to Australian art.
