Hogarth is the artist most closely associated with Graham Greene, having illustrated some covers of his books, and he has travelled all over the world in the footsteps of the author, rediscovering the scenes he recorded earlier. From Clapham Common to Zaire, from Haiti to Saigon, he has sought the exact places where Greene's characters acted out their dramas. Scenes from 24 works of fiction are included: the decaying French-style mansions of Saigon ( The Quiet American ); the leper colony in the former Belgian Congo ( A Burnt-Out Case ); Vienna's flamboyant cemetery and the Giant Wheel in Prater ( The Third Man ); the Palace Pier in Brighton ( Brighton Rock ) and Antibes, where the artist was escorted by Greene himself. Each group of pictures is accompanied by a summary and excerpts from the novel depicted as well as entries from the artist's journal. A further layer of commentary is provided by Grahame Greene who adds his own reflections, in the light of the pictures, on the places he once knew.
