About this product

Product Information

Both Highgate and Hampstead are now two of London's most desirable suburbs and they have had a long and varied history with many literary and artistic associations from Charles Dickens to William Blake. There were many attempts to build over the Heath and Londoners had to fight to preserve it from developers including the then Lord of the Manor. In this part of the Old London series the history of many of London's oldest suburbs is detailed - Hackney, Hoxton, Kingsland, Dalston, Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, Tottenham, Edmonton and Stratford-le-Bow. Each one has its own history and has seen many famous people and events. The old Roman road, Ermine Street, runs north through these suburbs and John Gilpin made his famous ride along it. Isaac Walton also travelled this way to fish in his beloved River Lea. Every part of London has had its famous, and infamous, residents but these parts probably have more than their fair share.
