Da questo spunto Maugham ha tratto una feroce e divertente commedia di costume. Alla sua uscita, nel 1930, quando molti riconoscevano nei personaggi tutte le leggende viventi dell'epoca, da Hardy a Walpole, il libro suscitò enorme scandalo.
