About this product

Product Information

Built in 1859, the Lee Moor Tramway carried china clay, sand, coal and other necessities to and from the clay works at Lee Moor. Many of the sections of the tramway were horse-drawn linked by cable-hauled inclines, and it enabled the clay industry to thrive in south west Dartmoor until more modern transport overtook it. The tramway had two remarkable features: a gauge of four feet, six inches, for it was built as a branch off the 1823 Plymouth & Dartmoor Railway; and its level crossing of the Great Western Railway's west of England main line at Laira, where being the older route, its trains had priority over GWR expresses until as late as 1960. Both the steam locomotives introduced in 1899 to work the section between the inclines have been restored and preserved, one at the National Trust's Saltram House and the other at Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum in Cornwall. This pictorial history brings together a large collection of photographs illustrating the many facets of the railway, as well as contributing to the social, industrial and transport history of Devon.
