Notes
2015 two CD collection devoted to vivacious, highly individual, mostly jazz orientated, interpretations of just a selection of Cole Porter's compositions. The playboy genius who revolutionized popular song and arguably the greatest lyricist in the English language, Cole Porter, in a career that spanned more than three decades, wrote over a thousand songs, nearly all of them for Broadway shows or Hollywood movies. Working within these quintessentially twentieth century forms, Porter proved that classical music did not have the monopoly on modernity, sophistication or invention and that popular music could be more than just show business and schmaltz. That it could be important and influential. Though he was never a jazz composer per se, Porter understood jazz and might easily have spent his life blending jazz and show styles with classical music, but instead chose to do the exact opposite, devoting a long career to applying the sophisticated techniques of classical composition to popular songwriting. While contemporary classical composers saw jazz as little more than a flavor, to Porter it was the rhythm and harmony of the moment. It no accident then that some of the greatest interpretations of Cole Porter's songs were created by jazz, blues, swing and pop artists of the century; artists that responded to the subtleties of Porter's songs and imbued them with depth and sensitivity.
