World Tour Soccer 2003 expands on 989 Sports' first soccer title on PlayStation 2 by upping the number of international and club teams to 700 and incorporating more than 13,500 authentic players. Five continental cups and one world cup are up for grabs, or players can embark on a separate Career Mode. Each career begins in a young school league while players guide their inexperienced athletes to international success. Challenge Mode grades teams on how well they perform on the field rather than how often they score. The game also features completely redesigned player models and faces of the top stars. <br><br>Exhibition has players selecting stadiums, one of four difficulty levels, and match length (from 4 to 20 minutes). As in World Tour Soccer 2002, the game offers three styles of competitions: Season, Special Competition, and International Competition. Players also have the option to edit existing teams or create new ones, customizing uniforms, team names, flags, and players. While in the game, players can set their team's formation, adjust zones, edit lines, and change starting lineups or positions. <br><br>Season Mode offers a total of 15 National Seasons to compete in as players attempt to win one of 49 different trophies, which are stored in a special Trophy Case for later viewing. A Transfer Market option also exists, which has players bidding on athletes from any team or league using their assigned bank balance. Special Competitions are separate tournaments featuring five options: Superteam Championship, which is akin to an All-Star Game, Timewarp League and Cup, which blends great teams from the 1950s to the 1990s, Custom League, and Custom Cup.<br><br>International Competition follows a similar format to the other competitions, only this time the tournaments are for the right to win the Euro, South Americas, Africa, Asia/Oceana, and Americas Cups. Once the game begins, players can further adjust various options, such as whether or not fouls are called, the type of referee (fair, strict, or blind), draw ruling (tie or sudden death), injuries, and offsides, as well as time of day and weather conditions for stadiums. A total of seven commentary languages can be selected while players compete on the field.
