Rosaria, rimasta vedova, lascia il paesino della Lucania in cui ha sempre vissuto per trasferirsi insieme ai suoi figli a Milano dove già si è stabilito Vincenzo, il primogenito. Anche se inizialmente la famiglia ha qualche problema ogni figlio si ingegna per portare un po' di soldi a casa. Simone riesce ad introdursi nell'ambiente della boxe, Rocco lavora in una lavanderia, Ciro diventa un operaio specializzato. Simone scopre che Nadia, una ragazza di strada con la quale ha avuto una relazione travagliata, ha iniziato a frequentare Rocco. Il ragazzo, geloso del fratello, aggredisce violentemente la coppia, mettendo fine alla loro storia d'amore. Rocco si dedicherà completamente al pugilato per sollevare la famiglia dai debiti ma non riuscirà a salvarla dalla disgregazione e dalla perdita dei valori.
