About this product
Product Information
This is a reissue of a reference book which traces the development of the work of British women novelists from the 1800s onwards. It includes assessments of writers such as the Brontes, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf Margaret Drabble, Doris Lessing and Iris Murdoch. The book also presents critical studies of Victorian novelists such as Mary Braddon, Rhoda Broughton and Sarah Grand, who were once household names but are now largely forgotten. The book aims to be a record of women writers and the cultural values reflected by succeeding generations. The author's previous books include The Female Malady: Women, Madness and English Culture 1830-1980 . This revised and expanded edition contains a new introductory chapter surveying the book's reception as well as a postscript celebrating the legacy of feminism and feminist criticism in the efflorescence of contemporary British fiction by women.
