Reviews
«Joel Beekes's study of the relationship between English Puritan theology and the Second Dutch Reformation ('Nadere Reformatie') is the first extensive essay on this important topic to appear in the English language. This detailed and balanced work also deserves to be counted among several recent attempts to draw attention to the continuities in the development of post-Reformation Protestantism and to offer a more positive historical assessment of the internal development of post-Reformation Reformed theology. Beeke's work is especially instructive in its comparative study of faith and assurance in the thought of Owen, Goodwin, and Comrie in its analysis of Dutch scholarship on the 'Nadere Reformatie'.» (Richard A. Muller, Calvin Theological Seminary) «This is a long-needed and outstanding work on the subject of assurance with special reference to the Reformers, Puritans, and Dutch divines. Broad in research, discerning in explanation, and compelling in its conclusions, Dr. Beeke's book will be of permanent importance for preachers and students.» (Iain Murray, Banner of Truth Trust) «Of great significance, in my own view, is Dr. Beeke's recognition that the development of classical Reformed thinking in the Puritan period was in fact an advance in its 'trinitarian' character. An erudite treatise, 'Assurance of Faith: Calvin, English Puritanism, and the Dutsch Second Reformation', is also a valuable study in 'pastoral' theology. It will repay careful reading by both scholar and pastor alike.» (Sinclair Ferguson, Westminster Theological Seminary) «With this substantial and welcome volume Joel R. Beeke makes a significant and diverse contribution to the history and import of a currently neglected doctrine. This detailed, clearly organised work reads well... The notes are a mine of information, and a whole course of lectures could be developed out of some of them.» (Alan P.F. Sell, EuroJth)

Synopsis
Against the backdrop of the magisterial Reformers (with special attention to Calvin), Dr. Beeke examines the theological development of personal assurance of faith from 1600-1760 in English Puritanism and its parallel movement in the Netherlands, the so-called Second Reformation. In-depth studies and comparisons of William Perkins, Willem Teellinck, the Westminster Confession, John Owen, Alexander Comrie, and Thomas Goodwin convincingly demonstrate with fresh insights that the differences between Calvin and English/Dutch Calvinism on assurance arose primarily from a newly evolving pastoral context rather than from foundational variations in doctrine. By a careful study of the role of God's promises, the practical and mystical syllogisms, and the witness of the Spirit, this study breaks new ground in revealing how English and Dutch Calvinism developed a biblically balanced doctrine of assurance which the Christian church sorely needs today., Against the backdrop of the magisterial Reformers (with special attention to Calvin), Dr. Beeke examines the theological development of personal assurance of faith from 1600-1760 in English Puritanism and its parallel movement in the Netherlands, the so-called Second Reformation.
