About this product
Product Information
Hugh Binning was born in 1627 in Dalvennan, Ayrshire, the son of a wealthy landowner who gave him an excellent education. Alexander Grosart wrote, "He easily outstripped his schoolfellows of twice and thrice his years, and in his thirteenth and fourteenth years his gravity and piety were recognized with a kind of awe by all." Binning entered the University of Glasgow at the age of thirteen, earning a master of arts degree in philosophy in 1646. At age eighteen, he was appointed professor of philosophy because the other applicant for the position was unwilling to face "such an able antagonist" as Binning. While teaching, he studied theology with the intention of entering the ministry of the Church of Scotland. By all accounts and despite undertaking two full-time careers simultaneously, Binning's lectures were both profound and practical. For Binning, philosophy was the handmaid of theology. Ordained in 1650, Binning served as a minister in Govan, Scotland, for three years, quickly becoming known as a God-fearing, eminent preacher and able scholar. His sermons, which "regularly attracted vast crowds," were warm, pastoral, and experiential. He appealed to the conscience, urging sinners to come immediately to Christ. Binning died from tuberculosis at Govan in 1653 at age twenty-six and was buried in his churchyard. His writings were prolific for a young man; none were printed during his life, although most of them were published after his death. Book jacket.
