Works like a charm. I was able to connect my Panasonic DVX100 MiniDV camera to my Macbook Pro M1 Max like so: Firewire 400 cable from the camera into a FW400 to FW800 adapter, then this FW800 to Thunderbolt adapter, then a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 adapter.
