Le fotografie raccolte in questo vero e proprio album furono scattate da due SS tra il maggio e il giugno 1944, in occasione della deportazione massiccia a Birkenau degli ebrei d'Ungheria. Permettono di rappresentare ciò che significò per milioni di persone l'arrivo in questo immenso centro di morte: molti degli uomini, delle donne e dei bambini ritratti nell'Album furono uccisi nelle ore immediatamente successive agli scatti. Oltre alle circostanze della scoperta dell'album, completamente riprodotto con le indicazioni e i testi originali dei due ufficiali nazisti, i testi raccolti descrivono l'organizzazione del campo e in che modo venisse applicata quella "soluzione finale" concepita dai nazisti per condurre a buon fine la loro criminale opera di distruzione. Le foto sono state ritrovate da una detenuta, Lili Jacob, pochi giorni prima della liberazione, che riconobbe se stessa e i fratelli sterminati nel campo.
