Tenía Sócrates más de setenta años cuando fue acusado de corromper a la juventud y de no creer en los dioses, por lo que tuvo que comparecer ante los jueces. Sócrates asumió su propia defensa. Su actitud durante el juicio (y después, una vez condenado a muerte) fue la de un verdadero filósofo. No se dedicó a suplicar, ni lloriquear, no cayó en artimañas de defensa. En las "Apologías" (defensas) que han llegado hasta nosotros a través de sus discípulos, entre las que destacan la de Platón, la actitud de Sócrates se distingue por su serenidad, dignidad y valentía. Las palabras que el filósofo dirige a sus jueces aún nos conmueven e impulsan a la reflexión, y son el contenido sintetizado de la forma de pensar de este gran hombre y de las ideas a cuya transmisión dedicó su vida y su muerte.Este libro contiene el texto íntegro de la Apología de Sócrates, recogida y escrita por Platón, traducida y comentada. Hay que resaltar que esta Apología refleja directamente la enseñanza socrática, pues Platón no había conformado todavía sus propias teorías, las cuales contienen la influencia de las ideas de los pitagóricos, que conoció más tarde. Además, la cuestión estaba todavía muy reciente en la memoria de los atenienses, y no podía Platón alejarse mucho de las palabras realmente pronunciadas durante el juicio, por lo que su contenido debe estar muy cerca de lo que en realidad fue la defensa de su maestro. Así que, dado que Sócrates no escribió ningún libro, estamos ante un documento excepcional sobre sus palabras y su filosofía. La Apología se puede dividir en las siguientes partes: 1. Discurso principal, referencia a la acusación, defensa y filosofía de Sócrates. 2. Primer veredicto y propuestas sobre la pena. 3. La sentencia a muerte, la profecía, disertación sobre la muerte y despedida del filósofo.
