Synopsis
From hearing and singing nursery rhymes as a child on my mother's knee and later in my teens discovering the magical creations of William Shakespeare, T S Eliot and Lewis Carroll, I have always been drawn to the wonder of words., Nature abhors a vacuum and I feel that way about blank sheets of paper. I cannot resist idly doodling with a biro and coming up with recognisable drawings of landscapes, aeroplanes, cars, human beings, horses etc. and in a way, metaphorically speaking, this mental urge to create something from nothing allows my muse to touch me on the shoulder from time to time, prompting me to grab my pen if something engages my mind and sets my poetic juices flowing. This has led over two discreet periods in my life to the composition of fifty three poems reproduced in this volume. They reflect personal and philosophical impressions including places I visited and incidents that have occurred to me from time to time that for some reason have triggered my desire to write once more. It is for others to judge what might have been my precise motivation at the time but I wrote them all simply because I felt the aforementioned urging and hoped that the words I was scribbling on the page would turn out to be pleasing to the ear, stimulating to the mind and warming to the heart. That said, I have concluded each poem by giving the date when composed and a title giving an indication of the circumstance or impulse that led me to put pen to paper. At the end of the day, I very much subscribe to the notion that like music, poetry represents the only absolute in a relative world and in this vein, I like to think that my poems in this collection, good or bad, might somehow 'echo round the universe for those who might be listening there'.
