Reviews
A rollicking adventure into the origins of the apostrophe, the proliferation of profanity in American culture, and everything in between., Brims with wit, personality--and commas. . . . Norris' enthusiasm is infectious. She's as passionate about sharp pencils as she is about sharp writing. . . . Delightful., There is so much to be learned from Mary Norris''s marvelous memoir: she tells us when to hyphenate a compound noun, shows whether to employ the subjunctive, and elucidates the suggestively named copulative verb. But she is no dry guardian of grammar, no punitive Poobah of punctuation. In giving an account of her journey from provincial obscurity to the glamour of New York--and The New Yorker--she offers a warm, tender, and funny coming of age story. (Or possibly it''s a ''coming-of-age'' story. Mary could tell you.), Destined to become an instant classic...It's hard to imagine the reader who would not enjoy spending time with Norris., Mary Norris is the verbal diagnostician I would turn to for a first, second, or third opinion on just about anything., There is so much to be learned from Mary Norris's marvelous memoir: she tells us when to hyphenate a compound noun, shows whether to employ the subjunctive, and elucidates the suggestively named copulative verb. But she is no dry guardian of grammar, no punitive Poobah of punctuation. In giving an account of her journey from provincial obscurity to the glamour of New York--and The New Yorker--she offers a warm, tender, and funny coming of age story. (Or possibly it's a 'coming-of-age' story. Mary could tell you.), Ms. Norris, who has a dirty laugh that evokes late nights and Scotch, is...like the worldly aunt who pulls you aside at Thanksgiving and whispers that it is all right to occasionally flout the rules., Mary Norris brings a tough-minded, clear-eyed, fine-tuned wisdom to all the perplexities and traps and terrors of the English sentence., Destined to become an instant classic.... It's hard to imagine the reader who would not enjoy spending time with Norris., Mary Norris has an enthusiasm for the proper use of language that's contagious. Her memoir is so engaging, in fact, that it's easy to forget you're learning things.

- r***1 (180)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThe book was exactly as described and arrived quickly. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++
- k***a (326)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchasePositive experience but could be better. Item description was accurate but, it was shipped in a simple bag with no carton or any protection. The bag was broken in places and the USPS bent the book like it was a newspaper and ruined what was an excellent looking book. That was clearly the USPS fault but a "Do Not Bend" or carton would help next time. Otherwise accurate description, value, condition and Fast shipping. I'm a returning customer and will keep buying from World of Books
