Anton Reiser ist ein psychologischer Roman dessen erste drei Teile in den Jahren 1785 bis 1786 in Berlin erschienen. Dieser psychologische Roman ist von Moritz als Biografie eines begabten, sehr um Anerkennung bemuhten Jugendlichen geschrieben, der als Lehrling eines Hutmachers die Aufmerksamkeit seiner Umgebung erregt. Die Handlung spielt uberwiegend in Pyrmont, Braunschweig und Hannover. Dort ist Reiser, gegen den Willen seines Vaters, als Schuler einer Lateinschule und des Gymnasiums als Stipendiat bemuht, die kleinburgerliche, vom Pietismus gepragte Welt seiner Eltern zu uberwinden. Das Leben als Stipendiat wird jedoch von Reiser als ebenso erniedrigend erlebt wie zuvor das Leben im Haus seiner Eltern und wahrend seiner Lehre. Gleichzeitig wird er jedoch durch den dringenden Wunsch nach Erfolg motiviert und sucht diesen in der Dichtung und im Leben am Theater. Karl Philipp Moritz (1756-1793) war ein vielseitiger Schriftsteller des Sturm und Drang, der Berliner Aufklarung und der Weimarer Klassik, der auch der Fruhromantik Impulse gab. Er hatte ein bewegtes Leben als Hutmacherlehrling, Schauspieler, Hofmeister, Lehrer, Redakteur, Schriftsteller, Spataufklarer, Philosoph und Kunsttheoretiker.
