Mentre i carboni della guerra sono ancora incandescenti, don Primo Mazzolari scrive di getto pagine sulla tolleranza. Il libro è concluso nel marzo 1945. È frutto dei mesi di clandestinità, consumatisi dall'agosto 1944 all'aprile dell'anno successivo prima a Gambara, presso l'amico don Giovanni Barchi, e poi nel rifugio della canonica di Bozzolo. Don Primo soffre l'impotenza nella parola e nell'azione: per questo si ubriaca "di solitudine e di inchiostro". Costretto in esilio, si rifugia nella forza del pensiero. Scrive. Prega. Medita e riempie fogli. Gli fanno compagnia i libri, un platano a pochi metri dalla stanza e il cielo. Confessa: "Da qui, alzando gli occhi dal libro e spesso chiudendoli, ho seguito il declinare dell'estate, tutto l'autunno e tutto l'inverno". Scrivere e riflettere sulla tolleranza è gesto di resistenza alla solitudine umana cui Mazzolari non intende rinunciare.
