Rickover projected none of the commanding physical presence of the stereotypical naval captain. But nobody in the ... maneuvering room doubted his authority. ... His indomitable will, ruthless determination, and engineering insight had brought the submarine thermal nuclear' reactor and Nautilus program to this point. Plenty of doubts remained about whether the [reactor] would explode when it powered up. Panicky engineers suggested starting it up remotely. Rickover killed that idea. He even rebuffed controlling the start-up from the balcony over the hull. Should anything go wrong, he would suffer the consequences along with the rest ...
