About this product

Product Information

Of the many art forms supported by the Federal WPA programs during the Depression, printmaking holds particular interest because of the ways that the design of the program, the nature of printmaking itself, and the political climate of the time produced a distinctive approach to style and subject matter, impressive innovations in technique, and a surprising degree of social fluidity among artists around issues of race and gender. This publication accompanies an exhibition that celebrates the generous gift of 100 WPA-Era prints to the DePaul Art  Museum from the collection of Belverd and Marian Needles. The book includes essays by leading scholars addressing various aspects of American printmaking in the 1930s, together with a brief essay by the collector. The exhibition runs Sept. 11-November 23, 2014.
