Dietro l'apparente provocazione, la domanda cela uno dei nodi più inestricabili della morale di ogni tempo, e troverà due risposte antitetiche: se Bianchon afferma che non ne sarebbe capace, Rastignac ribatte che la vita, talvolta, porta necessariamente a passi estremi. La "parabola del mandarino" è un'invenzione di Balzac, che dimostrò un grande acume letterario nel riferirla a un pensatore e a un periodo in cui il dibattito sull'egoismo umano e sui suoi limiti era pervenuto a interrogativi capitali, cui facevano riscontro tesi opposte.
