Quando sua moglie entra in coma in seguito ad un incidente in barca al largo di Waikiki, nelle isole Hawaii, Matt King, padre di due figlie, dovrà riesaminare il proprio passato e affrontare gli imprevisti del futuro. Rimasto solo, cercherà di ricucire il rapporto con le figlie, la matura Scottie di dieci anni e la ribelle Alexandra di diciassette, dovendo allo stesso tempo decidere se vendere o meno la terra di famiglia, una striscia di spiaggia tropicale di inestimabile valore, che la famiglia King ha ereditato dai reali hawaiani e dai missionari. Quando Alexandra rivela al padre che la madre, al momento dell'incidente, si trovava in vacanza con il suo amante, Matt inizia a riflettere sulla sua vita e capisce che deve darle una svolta.
