All six of these books have the same format: seven full-page color photographs, a map showing the group's range throughout the world, and a color diagram showing the insect's life cycle. A brief glossary and a listing of two books offering additional reading aid the reader. Very helpful for today's computer-literate youngsters is a section titled "Internet Sites" that details the steps to take when searching the Internet for additional information. Each book offers information on the body structure of the insect of its title, the animal's common habitats, and its feeding habits. Grasshoppers provides information on these insects' phenomenal jumping ability and their potential feeding destruction on farms. Praying Mantises offers interesting information on predation, camouflage, and cannibalism. Mosquitoes is very informative. Larvae can develop in old tires and tree holes. Some mosquitoes are carriers of pathogens that kill more people than any other creature. Beetles wisely points out that one of four insect species is a beetle. In Ants, the reader finds that these insects can carry 50 times their own weight, and in Fireflies the text tells the reader that the larvae look like small glowing worms (glowworms). I recommend this series highly for second- and third-grade students., The World of Insects series provides information that will fascinate any elementary age child, and the format will help teachers integrate science and informational reading. The facts about Beetles will entice children to want to learn more. Each book has a readability of grades two and three, with an interest level apppropriate to children from kindergarten through middle school. That makes this series ideal to lure reluctant readers to science and literacy. Like other books in the series, Beetles supports each page of text with a large photograph on the facing page. There is a good glossary in the back to define the key vocabulary words and an index so that young readers can practice researching specific information. The last page of each book includes a list of additional books and an internet site from which readers can obtain more information. Teachers and librarians will love the quizzes being developed for the Accelerated Reader program corresponding to books in this series.
