Terry Allen Moe came as pastor to Redeemer Lutheran, a traditional, working-class congregation in a poorer, mixed-race neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, in 1981. Five US presidents, six Portland mayors, and four Lutheran bishops later, Redeemer had been transformed into an innovative, spiritual-not-religious, member-based nonprofit called Leaven ......, This is the story of how the weaving of spirituality and organizing transformed a pastor and congregation. Over thirty-two years, five months, and seventeen days from 1981 to 2013, Pastor Terry Moe and his faith community let go of themselves as the Spirit transformed his ministry and built the people into a new community. It wasn't easy. It wasn't even the plan until late in the game. They turned to the "burning bush" of deepening spirituality and hard-nosed community organizing. The pastor and people changed, and together they deeply impacted the larger community. Redeemer died. Leaven/Salt and Light lives. The transformation continues. The bush still burns.
