Die Autorinnen arbeiten bei der Patienten-Heimversorgung im Heimdialysetraining. Mit ihrer uber drei Jahrzehnte langen Erfahrung als Dialyseschwestern gelingt ihnen eine anschauliche Darstellung der Dialyse von den durftigen Anfangen bis zu den beeindruckenden Erfolgen der Gegenwart. Kamen zunachst nur wenige ausgewahlte Patienten in den Genuss der technisch ausserst primitiven Behandlung mit der kunstlichen Niere , profitieren heute mehr als 60.000 chronisch nierenkranke Menschen in Deutschland von diesem inzwischen standardisierten und sehr sicheren Verfahren der High-Tech-Medizin. Nach einer Einfuhrung in die Medizingeschichte von Nierenerkrankungen und Dialyse folgt ein Ruckblick auf den Alltag der Dialysestation des Stuttgarter Katharinenhospitals in den spaten 60iger und 70iger Jahren. Kaum vorstellbar, welche Probleme damals an der Tagesordnung waren, aber auch, wie viel Hingabe und Improvisationstalent fur ihre Loesung aufzuwenden war. Dabei wird vor allem die Lebensleistung eines Mannes gewurdigt, Prof. Dr. Erich Streicher, einem der anerkannten Pioniere der Dialyse. Neu an diesem Buch zum Thema Dialyse - und das lag den Autorinnen besonders am Herzen - ist, dass auch Patientinnen und Patienten, die ihr Leben seit teilweise mehr als dreissig Jah-ren der technischen Apparatur kunstliche Niere verdanken sowie deren Angehoerige ausfuhrlich zu Wort kommen. Eindrucklich schildern sie ihre Erlebnisse aus den Anfangsjahren der Dialyse, als lebensbedrohliche Zwischenfalle zum Alltag gehoerten, beschreiben aber auch den unermudlichen Einsatz vieler AErzte und Pflegekrafte fur die Verbesserung der Lebensumstande ihrer Patienten.
