Ward Jansen (John Cusack) convicted of killing a seedy sheriff is given a new life when a female pen pal (Nicole Kidman) enlists the aid of two journalists to try and get him off death row. PRECIOUS' Lee Daniels adapts Pete Dexter's novel. As the investigation into the crime gets into full swing, romantic complications develop between the younger brother of Ward Jensen who is one of the investigators and the pen pal who hired them to save her fiance on death row. As the investigation continues, it stirs up issues of race and acceptance that are prevalent in the community which could cause serious consequences for everyone involved.

The Hollywood Reporter - In the spirit of the venture, the entire cast gets down and comes off all the better for it. Both Efron and McConaughey get very messed up physically, and both actors seem stimulated to be playing such flawed characters., The Guardian UK - Nicole Kidman gives her best performance since TO DIE FOR.
