However, behind the success, he was still hiding his sexuality from the world and endured the tragedy of losing his boyfriend to AIDs in the early 1990s and, in later years, his drug use and arrests came to overshadow much of his career. George's sudden death on Christmas Day at the age of 53 has inspired a new appreciation of his talent and revealed the extent of his kindness and generosity for others, staging concerts for NHS nurses and giving money to strangers in need.
