Reviews
"The third volume of A Guide to Welsh Literature covers an époque in the history of Welsh literature which is characterised by profound changes in its form, function and content, reflecting equally profound changes in social and political structures . . . The book provides students of Welsh and Celtic with a fine survey of Welsh literature in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and more with an impressive and up to date introduction to the intellectual life of Wales in this crucial period of its history." Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie, " A Guide to Welsh Literature c.1530-1700 mirrors the labours and mission of the scholars, poets, prose writers and translators whose works it seeks so succinctly and diligently to appreciate and evaluate. They would have revelled in its scholarship and erudition. It is a fitting tribute to their creativity and vision." - Books in Wales, This is the third in a series outlining the history of literature in the Welsh language from its beginnings in the sixth century to the present. It begins just before the Act of Union of 1536 and ends shortly after the death of Siôn Dafydd Laes, the family bard of Nannau in Merioneth and the last of the household poets, who was known to officialdom as plain John Davies. That very fact speaks eloquently of what had happened to Welsh poetry during the previous century and a half, when the Welsh came ever more closely drawn into the orbit of the English State. The professional poets had lost their status and function in society, and an amateur class began writing verse in the free metres.More significantly, perhaps, Welsh writers turned to prose, often for Humanist reasons, and to translating the Scriptures into the language of the common people. The Anglicans, Puritans and Catholics were particularly prolific in this respect, producing some of the early masterpieces on which later literature was to be based.Morgan Llwyd and Charles Edwards were prominent among the new prosateurs of the 17th century, but there were a significant number of Recusant writers who published their books on clandestine presses and at centres of learning in continental Europe. The historical background is lucidly explained by Gareth Elwyn Jones, the decline of professional poetry by Ceri W. Lewis, and the rise of free-metre verse by Cennard Davies and Nesta Lloyd.Welsh Humanist learning is covered in a chapter by Branwen Jarvis, while Isaac Thomas traces the complexities of translating and publishing the Bible under the patronage of Elizabeth I, and R. Geraint Gruffydd, here at his most erudite and polished, assesses the Anglican prose of the period.Puritan writers are the subject of a chapter by M. Wynn Thomas, and Roman Catholics by Geraint Bowen. Studies of the manuscript sources and the beginnings of printing in Welsh are provided by Graham C. G. Thomas and Charles Perry respectively. Within the century Welsh literature had developed from being one based on manuscript sources to printed books, mainly of a religious nature.Inevitably, there is a degree of overlap between some of the chapters and a certain amount of repetition, but this is an important survey and, as the editor so charmingly points out, 'some things bear saying twice'.Meic StephensIt is possible to use this review for promotional purposes, but the following acknowledgement should be included: A review from www.gwales.com , with the permission of the Welsh Books Council. Given that this volume contains eleven chapters by eleven different contributions, it is remarkably coherent. While the thorough index makes this a very useful reference book, it can also be read straight through as a fluid narrative of literary history . . . Each chapter constitutes a solid introduction to its specific field . . ." - New Welsh Review, "The contributors to this volume do an excellent job of addressing the far-ranging effects of these developments on Welsh poetry and prose, while also highlighting the uniqueness of individual poets and writers . . .
