Die Studien zum Thema habe ich im Winterhalbjahr 1973/74 am Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in haufigem Kontakt mit Millard Meiss begonnen. Seinem Andenken sei dieser Vortrag gewidmet. Meine Arbeit in den USA wurde durch das National Endowment for the Humamties (Grant H 5426) unterstutzt, wofur ich mich bedanke. Der Druckfassung gingen Vortrage an der Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfen- buttel, an den Universitaten Wien und Munchen, sowie auf dem Inter- nationalen Kongress fur Kunstgeschichte 1979 in Bologna voraus. Von den Anregungen, die mich nach dem Vortrag in Dusseldorf erreichten, seien die hilfreichen Bemerkungen von Werner Beierwaltes und Rudolf Kassel, die linguistischen Studien von Bernd Spillner (der mich auch auf die franzosi- schen Forscher Abraham Moles, David Victoroff und Georges Mounin hin- wies), sowie die Informationen von Werner Oechslin und Kim Veltman dankbar erwahnt. Erst nachtraglich erhielt ich Kenntnis von der wichtigen Arbeit Ernst Gombrichs The visual Image," in: Media and Symbols. The Forms of Expression, Communication and Education, ed. David E. Olson, Chicago 1974, 241-270 sowie von dem Buch von Barbara Maria Stafford: Symbol and Myth. Humbert de Superville's Essay on Absolute Signs in Art, London 1979, das ungewohnte uberlegungen zur Sprache der Architektur enthalt (111, Anm. 9; 112, Anm. 34; 184, Anm. 1; 144-146, 185, Anm. 44).
