Les trois-cents premi res pages concernent essentiellement les relations existant entre ce p re et son fils, le Petit Paul, qui se languit et meurt, et l'amour exclusif que se portent Paul et sa soeur Florence que Mr Dombey n glige sans retenue. Le reste du roman concerne plut t la relation p re-fille que le malheur finit par rapprocher, Mr Dombey, en effet, perdant de sa superbe sous les coups du sort et c dant enfin l'affection rest e sans faille de Florence. Dans l'ensemble, malgr des passages comiques comme il s'en trouve dans toute l'oeuvre de Dickens, Dombey et Fils est un roman d'humeur sombre qui oppose symboliquement le foyer aride de Mr Dombey au rayonnement affectueux de la famille Toodle et au luminaire qu'est l' tablissement nautique dirig par Solomon Gills, l'oncle Sol, au nom pr destin .
