A rather literal interpretation of Heller's best-seller, made the year after the more successful MASH. Heller's verbal paradoxes are sophomoric, to be relished by 20-year-old students. They work less well on screen, and for older viewer. Starting brightly, the film descends into the damaged post-traumatic psyche of WWII bombardier, Yossarian, who badly wants to return to NY from Italy. More an indictment of the way war changes people & society, than anti-war. Very good cast, but cheap production
