La materia seca disponible es un factor esencial en la gestion de las explotaciones ganaderas extensivas. Los volumenes de produccion herbacea anual en estas dependen tanto de factores fisicos como humanos, el comportamiento de unos y otros modifican los volumenes de produccion anual. Son, sobre todo, los factores humanos relacionados con la gestion y manejo del ganado los que mas influencia tienen en esa produccion herbacea. El objetivo basico de esta investigacion es la cuantificacion de la materia seca disponible utilizando como base los datos de evaluacion en campo de disponibilidad de pastos y el empleo de indices de vegetacion satelitales, todo ello para poder estimar en tiempo real la disponibilidad de pastos como oferta base del pastoreo en extensivo. El conocimiento de la disponibilidad de materia seca se convierte de esta manera en una herramienta esencial para la toma de decisiones en la gestion de las explotaciones ganaderas, ya que ello posibilita la estimacion del consumo animal aparente, ello unido al conocimiento de la capacidad de consumo de cada especie ganadera puede favorecer la cuantificacion de una ratio de superficie de pastoreo por animal en extensivo.
