Notes
Pianist and lecturer, Elaine Vander Plate Held, performs music most people have never had the opportunity to hear...the music of unknown, forgotten, yet talented women composers throughout history. When in 1980 Ms Vander Plate Held became interested in the subject of classical music written by women, she was dismayed to find how little of it was published and available outside of library holdings. As she researched the names of women composers and learned of their music, it became apparent that there was a rich trove of extraordinary music by women which was not being recognized or performed. It was with this new realization that the lecture concerts, 'Honoring Women Composers,' was born. These concerts opens up a whole new world of music for audiences. She often invites other professional musicians to perform with her to add variety to the concert and to make it clear that women composers wrote for all genres of music. Ms. Vander Plate Held takes the time to describe the composer's life, their struggles, their dreams, and their courage in the face of extraordinary family and societal hurdles. But it is so much more than a concert experience...'this is a rare opportunity to bring women's music into parity with men's music, by promoting and finally honoring the rightful worth of women composers'. In 1999 she presented an organ recital in Dokkum, The Netherlands, the only organist from the United States in the twelve-concert series and the only performer to play music by women composers. Elaine Vander Plate Held received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Masters of Church Music in Choral Conducting and Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ. She studied piano with Joan Lippincott, Mathilde McKinney, and Harold Zabrack; organ with Eugene Roan and John Weaver in NYC; conducting with Constantina Tsoulainou, Frauke Haasemaan, and Allan Crowell. She has concertized as a solo and ensemble pianist and organist, as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists, and served as a guest conductor for children and adult choir festivals. She has been a church musician for almost 30 years, conducting choirs and orchestras, and performing the organ, piano, and harpsichord repertoire.
