    Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) war einer der bedeutendsten Weisen Indiens. Er führte am Berg Arunachala in Südindien ein zurückgezogenes Leben. Menschen aus allen Ländern, Bildungsschichten und Religionen kamen zu ihm. Er lehrte vorwiegend Selbstergründung (atma vichara) und kam mit vielen Standardwerken des Advaita Vedanta und des hinduistischen Schrifttums in Berührung, weil Devotees sie ihm brachten, damit er sie ihnen erklären möge. Im Laufe seines Lebens schrieb er Gedichte und Prosa, meist aber nicht aus eigenem Antrieb, sondern weil seine Anhänger ihn darum baten oder als Antwort auf ihre Fragen. Zudem übersetzte er einige wichtige Advaita-Werke.
