Apart from the Prior's Lodgings, which continue to be occupied today, Wenlock Priory in Shropshire is all but a ruin but, with a little bit of imagination, the size and grandeur of the large monastic complex can be relived once more. This guide to the site explores both its ruins and the history of its foundation, occupation and eventual decline. Julie Pinnell takes the reader on a tour of the vast church, founded in the 7th century and made famous by the miracles of the abbess St Milburge, its library, St Michael's Chapel, the cloister, refectory, Chapter House, infirmary, sacristy and Lady Chapel. Refounded as a priory in the 11th century, it was stripped of its grandeur by the Dissolution and went on to become a private residence.
