Die vier B cher von De caelo - nachtr glich aus drei Lehrvortr gen zusammengestellt - behandeln nicht ausschlie lich Probleme kosmologischer Natur, so dass bereits antike Kommentatoren die Frage nach ihrem tats chlichen Thema aufwarfen, da hier nicht nur eine Untersuchung ber Himmel und Sterne vorliegt, sondern auch eine Abhandlung ber die Erde, eine Analyse der Entstehung der Elemente und schlie lich eine Monographie ber das Leichte und das Schwere. Aristoteles veranschaulicht die komplizierte Geschichte der Lehre vom "ersten K rper" bzw. vom f nften Element - dem ther -, der als Stoff des Himmels angesehen wird. Diese Theorie entstand aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach aus den Debatten in der platonischen Akademie, wurde von Aristoteles in seinen Vortr gen, institutionalisiert' und stellte von da an den Bezugspunkt f r das gesamte kosmologische Denken des Altertums dar. Angesichts der in den letzten Jahrzehnten entstandenen und heute lebendiger denn je gef hrten Debatte unter Wissenschaftshistorikern, Wissenschaftsphilosophen und Philosophiehistorikern ber Wurzeln und Bedeutung der wissenschaftlichen Revolution des 16./17. Jahrhunderts umrei t Jori in seiner Einleitung unter anderem die Gr nde, weshalb das von Aristoteles in De caelo illustrierte kosmologische System in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte eine so bedeutende und lang andauernde Rolle gespielt hat.
