Football writer and scout David Bond pays tribute to the great players and managers who have served the Tigers so well since their League formation in 1905. There are players such as the great 'Jackie' Smith, the goalscoring talisman who notched up the highest number of goals in Europe in 1909-10, Viggo Jensen, the Danish international who endeared himself to the Boothferry Park fans when he signed in 1948, and of course Dean Windass, a great character whose seminal goal in the 2008 play-off final carried the Tigers into the footballing top-flight for the first time in their history. Also featured are popular, long-serving goalkeepers such as George Maddison, Billy Bly and Tony Norman and the glory days of the 1960s, including the high-scoring inside-forward trio of Ken Wagstaff, Chris Chilton and Ken Houghton. And not forgetting the superb managers, Bond details the Hull City careers of luminaries such as Raich Carter, a brilliant pre-war player and excellent post-war manager, and Brian Horton, the midfield general turned determined tactician who gained promotion in his first season in charge.
