About half were awarded for the Polish Soviet War, especially for the Battle of Warsaw in June 1920 in which the Poles defeated the Soviets resulting in one of the greatest historical events in which the Poles stopped the spread of communism in Europe. The recipient of this cross was one of these heroic men who contributed to that Polish victory. For those not familiar with Polish History, the irony is that thousands of VM recipients of this era also fought in the 1939 and were killed or captured. At one time and at one place KATYN, 22,000 Polish officers and NCOs were murdered by the Soviets hundreds with the Virtuti Militari on their uniforms.”
