During their 20 year reign on the East Coast Main Line they earned the affection and respect of railmen and enthusiasts alike, culminating in the emotional scenes at King's Cross in January 1982, on the last day of Deltic operation. In this personal and non-technical account, the author provides a year-by-year, month-by-month record of the Deltic years, from prototype to preservation, covering the early period of consolidation, through the middle years of achievement and domination to the period of withdrawal and disposal. Hugh Watson is North-East Regional Co-ordinator for the Deltic Preservation Society.
