The second album by Italian power metal act Labyrinth since an intra-band schism led to the departure of leader Olaf Thörsen, 6 Days to Nowhere continues the near-total stylistic shift begun with its predecessor, 2005's Freeman. Abandoning the tropes of contemporary European metal almost entirely, 6 Days to Nowhere is a melodic hard rock album in the '80s style. New singer Roberto Tiranti has settled comfortably into his role, and the prog rock influences that have always been implicit in the band's sound come to the fore on tracks like the epic "Mother Earth," which recalls the prog-metal heyday of Queensrÿche. On the other hand, the banal cover of "Come Together" does no one any favors. While 6 Days to Nowhere may disappoint those longterm fans who haven't already followed Thörsen to his current act Vision Divine, those still hanging on to their old King's X albums will likely find something of interest here. ~ Stewart Mason
