Fifteen years previously, a teenage romance had left free spirit Dalva Northbridge pregnant by her half-brother, Duane. The disastrous situation was resolved when Duane was sent away and the child put up for adoption. Now in her thirties, Dalva has left her old life in the Nebraska plains for a new existence in California. Dalva's love for Duane has never died, however, and she sets off on an odyssey to the Florida Keys to rediscover her first love.
