(2012) David Ayer's gritty police drama stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as LA cops who are used to dealing with minor street misdemeanours but are inadvertently dragged in over their heads and become targets for a powerful drugs cartel. Ayer ramps up the visual style by shooting the film using handcams; it looks and feels like a police documentary, and fans of The Shield will immediately feel at home with its fast-paced cuts and bumpy chase scenes. The buddy movie dynamics are present and correct, but the relationship between the two protagonists is believable enough that when the bullets start flying you'll genuinely care what happens to them.
