Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, who she saw in a vision prior to being transported, and they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection. Blending cell and computer animation and containing elements of both shoujo (anime geared towards girls) and shounen (anime geared towards boys), the series achieved enormous popularity in both Japan and in the U.S.
