In THE SANDLOT KIDS, the new kid on the block has to deal with the fact that his new neighbourhood loves baseball and that a beast lives behind the fence at Mr Mertle's house. In FIVE CHILDREN AND IT, Psammead an ancient, irritable, ugly sand fairy, which five children find one day in a gravel pit. As a reward for finding him, It grants the children one wish a day, the results of which will last until sunset. The children soon discover that making sensible wishes without any troublesome repercussions is more difficult than they first thought. In BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, a smart, resourceful young girl, Opal thinks people forgot how to share the joy. She's tired of moving from small town to small town with her father, a preacher at the Open Arms Baptist Church; she just wants to find a home and stop being lonely. One night she wishes for a best friend, and that companion arrives in the form of a magical, trouble-causing dog she comes upon in a Winn-Dixie supermarket. She names the dog Winn-Dixie, and they become inseparable, making friends with many of the town's most unusual, quirky characters.
