,Singing cowboy Gene Autry stars in a quartet of vintage Westerns that offer equal parts action sequences and musical interludes. In SOUTH OF THE BORDER (1939), Autry is a federal agent sent to Mexico to quell an insurrection. In DOWN MEXICO WAY (1942), he heads south again to trail two swindlers who made off with stolen loot. In MEXICALI ROSE (1939), he is hired by a radio station only to find that its owners are using the business as a front for their criminal dealings. And in GAUCHO SERENADE (1940), he plays a down-on-his-luck rodeo star who travels cross-country to help vindicate a wrongly accused man.
