S. Pearce Ar the request of a highly esteemed friend, I feel no he sitation in recommending the remarkable narrative, now republished, to the serious attention of the reader. It exhibits a life eminently formed on the example of Christ, and a death-bed scene of extraordinary elevation and triumph. It is next to impossible to contemplate either, as they are exhibited in the following memorial, without feeling an increasing conviction of the reality and dig nity of true religion. I am aware that some will object to the strain of devout ecstacy which characterises the sen tim and language of Mr. J aneway in his dying mo ments; but I am persuaded they will meet'with nothing, however ecstatic and elevated, but what corresponds to the dictates of Scripture, and the analogy of faith. He, who recollects, that the Scriptures speak of a peace which passeth all understanding, and of a joy unspeak able and full of glory, will not be offended at the lively expressions of these contained in this narrative; he will be more disposed to lament the low state of his own te ligious feeling, than to suspect the propriety of senti.
