NotesThe Cana Ramblers have achieved it all with the release of 'No Expectations.' This CD will satisfy bluegrass fans for sure, but it may also find a much wider audience. For the traditional bluegrass fans, there are plenty of solid driving, banjo thrashing, flatpicking, harmony saturated tunes. Those same fans, and new ones, will be delighted by the mix of new and unexpected material and the masterful way it is fitted into a unified band sound. For those who know this family band, it will be both familiar and new. For the new fans, it will be a revelation. Will Jones has been predicted to be the flatpick guitar hero of his generation by 'Flatpick Guitar Magazine.' His appearances on HBO, on PBS TV Song of the Mountains, on Radio and live with Chris Thile and the Bluegrass Allstars at the IBMA awards show have all been great. This CD captures all the guitar zeal along with some cool lead vocals as well as spot on harmonies. The true story behind his original tune 'Cash's Last Ride' is the stuff of legends. Laura Leigh Jones has been recognized as a sterling female vocalist. Here, Laura Leigh shines on lead and harmony vocals, but also shows off some entertaining mandolin work. She sings a heart wrenching, emotional plea on the traditional gospel number 'In the Garden.' But then she rollicks with some good natured girl-power on her original song 'Heartaches and Teardrops' and hams it up on the clever original 'Things things things.' Ashley Jones is another great female vocalist spotlighted on 'No Expectations' with the title cut of the Album. Bluegrass fans will marvel at Ashley's trick of singing a Mick Jagger tune which will appeal to bluegrassers of all ages. The singing and instrumentation and arrangement of this tune alone is worth the price of the CD. Then, she turns on a dime and soulfully sings a Hank Williams, Sr. classic which is loaded with harmonies. Ashley plays the upright bass and keeps the band in that tight groove. Phillip Jones adds to the original material with songwriting credits on five of the sixteen cuts. The uber traditional song 'Graybar Hotel' is like a new old bluegrass duet (with Laura Leigh) about jail and redemption. 'The Farm' is a harmony laced balad that fans will listen to over and over as the meaning is revealed. Surprises abound from the rocking final tune 'Going Down' where Phillip's lyrics and Will's guitar work are like a matched team of horses ploughing new ground. Phillip plays guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals. Rick Allred is the bluegrass legend of the group. His appearances from the Grand Ole Opry, across the festival circuit, and on over 75 recordings establishes Rick as a bluegrasser's bluegrasser. Playing banjo and harmony vocals with the Cana Ramblers is but one facet of Rick's multi-instrumentalist talent. He is perhaps best known for his mandolin work with bluegrass legends such as The Country Gentlemen, Summer Wages, Jim & Jesse and Larry Stevenson. The Cana Ramblers are loads of fun at their shows and are regarded as a must-see act. This CD, 'No Expectations' catches it all and is a must-have for any bluegrass fan. If you haven't been a bluegrass fan before, you should try this. It will win you over.
