Though he demonstrated an unswerving devotion to fascism, Italian businessman Giorgio Perlasca (Luca Zingaretti) grew so infuriated and incensed over the relentless persecution of Jews in early 1940s Budapest that he opted to take immediate corrective action. Perlasca masqueraded as a Spanish diplomat and set in motion a series of extraordinary events that culminated with his deliverance of 5,200 Jews from Auschwitz. In the process, he also saved a major Budapest ghetto and its inhabitants from annihilative immolation by the Nazis. In his dramatization of these events, director Alberto Negrin balances Perlasca's relentless courage in out-maneuvering the Nazis with frequent reminders of his shaky and controversial political stance.
